This Privacy Policy explains how Super Clear LTD ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares and protects personal data when you use FocalBrief: the web app at app.focalbrief.com, the FocalBrief Chrome extension, and the emails we send you (together, the "Service"). Super Clear LTD is the controller of that data.
1. What FocalBrief does
FocalBrief analyses the web pages you visit to describe what you focus on, what you are interested in and how that changes over time. It builds reports (an overview, an "Interest DNA" for each interest, a summary and an interest map) from browsing data you choose to give it, and refreshes them weekly.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Account information
When you sign in, our authentication provider Clerk gives us your name, email address, profile image URL and a unique account identifier from your Google account. We never see or store your Google password.
2.2 Browsing history you upload
During onboarding you can upload a browser history export (Google Takeout). It contains the addresses, titles and times of pages you visited. You can exclude sites before we process it.
2.3 Browsing activity from the extension
While tracking is switched on, the extension records, for each page you visit: its address, title, favicon, description and other page metadata; how long it was in focus each day and how many times you visited it; and the category assigned to it. It also records your daily focus totals. You can switch tracking off, keep it off in incognito windows (the default), and mark sites as ignored so they are never recorded. The extension reads your Chrome history on your device to show statistics in the extension itself; that history is not sent to us unless you export and upload it.
2.4 Information you give us
Your answers to the onboarding questionnaire, the interests and beliefs you choose, category corrections, pages you save to your weekly digest, sources you hide, profile details (name, profile picture, short bio and social profile links) and requests to be notified about features.
2.5 Information we generate
Reports, interest profiles, categories, focus percentages and expertise scores that we derive from the information above.
2.6 Payment information
Payments are handled by Stripe. We receive and store your receipt email, the card brand and last four digits, the amount, the plan and Stripe's reference numbers. We never receive or store your full card number.
2.7 Usage and device information
We use PostHog to understand how the web app is used and to find errors: pages viewed, features used, performance measurements, error reports and session recordings. This data is linked to your account (your account identifier, name and email). Session recordings are masked by default: text on the page, everything you type, and page addresses and titles are hidden, and network requests are not recorded. The extension does not send analytics.
3. How we use information
- To provide the Service: build and refresh your reports, show your activity, send the emails you need (access, onboarding progress, weekly assessment results) and take payment. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.
- To keep the Service secure, reliable and working, and to improve it: analytics, error reports and session recordings. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating and improving the Service.
- To comply with the law, for example tax and accounting records for payments. Legal basis: legal obligation.
When you create an account you also confirm that you agree to this Policy. You can withdraw from optional processing at any time, for example by switching extension tracking off.
4. AI processing
To describe pages and write your reports, we send the relevant data to Mistral AI, which runs large language models: page addresses and titles, your interests and focus distribution, and your questionnaire-derived beliefs and profile type. Mistral processes this data only to return the result to us; it is not used to train AI models. We also group your interests with a language model that runs on our own servers and sends data to no one.
Reports are generated automatically. They are descriptions, not professional, psychological or career advice.
5. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal data and we do not use it for advertising. We share it only with service providers that process it on our behalf, under contract, to run the Service:
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk | Sign-in and account management | United States |
| Neon | Database hosting | United States (AWS us-east-1) |
| OVHcloud | Application servers | United States (Virginia) |
| Cloudflare | Storage for uploaded files and profile pictures (R2), DNS | Global |
| Mistral AI | AI text generation | European Union |
| Resend | Sending email | United States |
| Stripe | Payments | United States |
| PostHog | Product analytics, error reports, session recordings | European Union |
| Website icons: the web app and extension request icons for the domains you have visited from Google's favicon service | Global |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or users' safety, or to a successor if our business is sold or merged.
Your profile picture is stored at a public, unguessable address so it can be shown in the app and in emails. Anyone who has that address can see the image.
6. International transfers
We are based in the UK, and most of our infrastructure is in the United States. Where your data leaves the UK or the European Economic Area, we rely on adequacy regulations (including the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified), or on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
7. How long we keep information
- An uploaded browser history file is deleted from storage once your first report has been processed. The pages it contained are kept with your account as your browsing activity.
- Account data, browsing activity and reports are kept while your account is active. When you delete your account (section 8), we delete them within 30 days. Database backups roll off within 7 days after that.
- Payment records are kept for as long as UK tax and accounting law requires (currently six years).
8. Your rights and choices
Under UK and EU data protection law you have the right to access, correct, delete and port your personal data, to object to or restrict our processing of it, and to withdraw consent at any time.
- Download your data: Settings → Download all my data.
- Delete your browsing history: Settings → Browsing history → Reset.
- Stop collection: switch tracking off in the extension or uninstall it.
- Delete your account and all associated data, or exercise any other right: email [email protected]. We respond within 30 days.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or your local data protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to resolve it first.
9. Security
We encrypt data in transit and at rest, restrict access to the people who need it to run the Service, and keep uploaded history files in private storage that only our servers can read.
10. Children
FocalBrief is not intended for anyone under 16, and you must confirm you are 16 or older to create an account. If we learn that we hold data about someone under 16, we delete it.
11. Cookies and local storage
We use cookies and browser storage that the Service needs to work: Clerk's sign-in cookies, a short-lived cookie that records routing decisions, and browser storage that keeps your data loaded between pages. PostHog uses storage to recognise your browser for analytics. The extension stores its settings and not-yet-sent activity on your device.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy. We will change the effective date above and, for material changes, tell you by email or in the app before the change takes effect.
